Aims and Scope
The Writer’s Camp Journal (WCJ) is an international, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing writing, editing, peer review, publishing, editorial practice, scholarly communication, and professional development within nursing, healthcare, education, and related disciplines. WCJ publishes original scholarship that examines how knowledge is created, communicated, reviewed, evaluated, disseminated, and used, while also fostering the development of authors, reviewers, editors, educators, and scholarly communities. Through research reports, commentaries, educational articles, reflective essays, and other forms of scholarly contribution, WCJ seeks to strengthen the people, practices, and systems that support the creation, exchange, and application of knowledge.
The WCJ welcomes research reports and scholarly studies related to writing, editing, peer review, editorial decision-making, publishing, scholarly communication, research integrity, publication ethics, authorship, reporting standards, mentorship, educational innovation, artificial intelligence in scholarly publishing, bibliometrics, scientometrics, and the development of publishing capacity within nursing and health care professions. Appropriate methodologies include quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods, evaluation, methodological, bibliometric, and review-based approaches. Research should contribute to the evidence base informing scholarly communication, editorial practice, publishing systems, peer review, or the development of authors, reviewers, editors, and scholarly communities.
Dual Dissemination Model
The Writer’s Camp Journal supports a Dual Dissemination Model designed to expand the reach and impact of scholarly work. Authors submitting a Research Report will also submit a Companion Essay that presents the significance, context, implications, or practical applications of the work for a broader audience.
Research Reports and Companion Essays serve different but complementary purposes. The Research Report communicates the study itself, including methods, findings, and scholarly interpretation. The Companion Essay engages readers in the larger conversation surrounding the work, highlighting why it matters, how it may be applied, and what questions it raises for authors, editors, educators, clinicians, or other stakeholders.
Companion Essays are not simplified versions of research reports, nor are they substitutes for the underlying scholarship. Rather, they provide an additional pathway into the same body of work, supporting broader engagement while preserving the integrity of the original research. Together, the Research Report and Companion Essay create complementary opportunities for scholarly communication and engagement.
Journal History
The Writer’s Camp Journal was established in 2025 as the official journal of Writer’s Camp, an online community dedicated to supporting writers, editors, reviewers, and scholars. The WCJ was created to provide an inclusive, developmental venue for scholarship related to writing, editing, publishing, and scholarly communication. Consistent with the mission of Writer’s Camp, the WCJ emphasizes mentorship, editorial guidance, and the development of authors at all career stages while maintaining high standards of scholarly rigor and peer review. In 2026, the WCJ broadened its mission to publish original research reports related to writing, editing, publishing and scholarly communication.

Author information: The Writer’s Camp Journal welcomes submissions from nurses, health care professionals, educators, editors, researchers, students, and others interested in writing, editing, publishing, and scholarly communication. The WCJ emphasizes mentorship, developmental editing, and support for both experienced and first-time authors.
Publication fee
The Writer’s Camp Journal uses a two-stage submission process designed to help authors determine whether a manuscript is a good fit before investing time in full submission and peer review.
Authors begin by submitting a Pre-Submission Query. A nonrefundable $15 fee supports editorial review of the query. If the query is approved, authors will be invited to submit a full manuscript through the journal’s Revise and Resubmit workflow. No additional submission fee is charged at this stage.
Upon acceptance for publication, authors are charged a $175 manuscript preparation fee. This fee supports copyediting, production, DOI registration, indexing, archiving, and publication services. The Writer’s Camp Journal does not charge article processing charges (APCs) beyond the manuscript preparation fee assessed upon acceptance.
Policies
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy: Authors who use AI tools in the writing of a manuscript, production of images or graphical elements of the paper, or in the collection and analysis of data, must be transparent in disclosing in the Materials and Methods (or similar section) of the paper how the AI tool was used and which tool was used. Authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscript, even those parts produced by an AI tool, and are thus liable for any breach of publication ethics. Authors will be asked to confirm agreement with this policy at the time of submission.
Authorship: The Writer’s Camp Journal follows the authorship recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). All listed authors must meet the ICMJE criteria for authorship and must have made substantial contributions to the work, participated in the preparation and approval of the manuscript, and accepted responsibility for its content.
Individuals who contributed to the work but do not meet the criteria for authorship should be acknowledged appropriately and should not be listed as authors.
Publication Ethics: The Writer’s Camp Journal follows the principles and guidance of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and expects authors, reviewers, and editors to adhere to the highest standards of publication ethics and scholarly integrity.
Academic Credentials: Authors should list only earned academic degrees and professional credentials in their byline and author information. Degrees that are in progress or candidacy designations (e.g., PhD(c), DNP(c), EdD(c)) should not be included.
Sponsors and affiliated institutions
The Writer’s Camp Journal is published by Writer’s Camp and supported through author fees, educational programming, donations from community members, volunteer editorial contributions, and the infrastructure provided by Maine Desk LLC and Writer’s Camp. The WCJ does not currently receive external grant funding or sponsorship support. We do not accept advertising.
